Monday Motivation: Transitioning Back to Reality

It’s Monday! This is likely one of the most difficult Mondays of the year, as we get over the long Thanksgiving and Black Friday weekend. Our bellies full and our wallets empty, it’s time to get back to work, and back to the daily grind.

I personally have thrown routine out the window lately, and after a long-weekend vacation in Montreal followed by the long holiday weekend, I am ready to reintroduce things like the gym, smoothies, and a normal sleep schedule back into my life.

Here are some links from around the web that are helping motivate me – from jumping back on the treadmill to getting the ball rolling on my holiday shopping:

  • I had this healthy smoothie for breakfast this morning. Did you know that yogurt plus oatmeal equals a complete protein? Mine was a little too thick, but still oh so good.
  • Looking for creative ways to finish up those turkey day leftovers? The Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond has you covered with some inspiring leftover turkey recipes
  • Self magazine always has my back when I’m feeling less than motivated at the gym. I think they read my mind when they pinned these 10 boredom-busting treadmill workouts on Pinterest yesterday

  • And JUST in time for the holidays, Gina Homolka of skinnytaste.com has a recipe for Skinny Cranberry Bliss Bars that I must try. These were my favorite holiday treat back when I worked at Starbucks, many eons ago

In conclusion, this Cyber Monday I am keeping the coffee flowing, and I have my gym bag packed and ready for tonight. I am motivated! How about you?

Awkward and Awesome Thursday: Mid-Summer Check In

Oh boy – where do I start?

AWKWARD

It has been so long since I logged in to Christina Does, that I forgot my password, and was locked out of my account for too many attempts to get in!

It has been SO long since I logged in to Christina Does, that once I was logged in, I realized  Wordpress had upgraded to a sleeker design, and was so distracted that I could not find the button to create a post.

It has been SOOO long since I logged in to Christina Does, that I’ve received three CSA veggie deliveries, and cooked countless “farm to table,” delicious meals – and have not shared a single one.

AWESOME (with some more awkward thrown in for good measure)

I’ve visited Florida, got a haircut that I love (for once!), planned and executed a FABULOUS bridal shower and bachelorette party for my sister, got sunburnt TWICE, attended a Fourth of July BBQ, saw one of my best friend perform in NYC, workworkworked, FINALLY had brunch at La Birreria in Eataly, learned A LOT about solar energy even though I don’t own a roof, cooked (pesto, pickled radishes, lamb/mint meatballs, watermelon/mint salad, etc.), had the most amazing date at Hospada on the Upper East Side…the list goes on. If this all feels like a run-on sentence, good. That’s what my life feels like right now, so this is the best way to share it with you!

Oh yea, and with pictures (which I’ve also been spotty on updating these days). This is my first time embedding photos from instagram, and I am totally geeking out on how easy it is:

Beach day:

Jamie’s parents’ house was infested with baby tree frogs:

My sister was a beautiful bachelorette:

Heaven:

Jamie bought an ugly shower curtain. I want to kill him for it.

…So yes, that’s all for now. I hope your summer is as busy as mine, partially because that would mean that you don’t really care that I’m neglecting you and my blog. I promise to return to a regular schedule (eventually), stick with me!

Monday Motivation: Bikini-Ready in Two Weeks?

Late Friday boyfriend and I decided we’re going to run away to Florida for Memorial Day weekend. I was so excited that I went straight from work to find a sexy little something to wear on the beach. I found a bikini I like, but still feel like I’m about a month away from how I want to look in it – I tend to embrace the “winter layer,” and let’s face it, the weather’s been acting more wintery than we’d like for Spring this season…

Do a little more each day than you think you possibly can

So, I’ve been searching for extra ways to get my booty into gear, and make the most of the next two weeks. Here’s what I’ve got:

And of course I’ll be hitting the gym a bit extra – hopefully starting the Summer schedule and sticking to it!

What do you do to keep on track during beach season?

Foodie Friday: Is Instagram Making Me Fat?

After receiving criticism for my social “foodspiration” photos at every family gathering I’ve attended since joining Instagram 18 months ago, I could not hold back an enormous eye-roll today while reading a Gothamist article on a study reporting that Instagramming photos of your food could lead to an unhealthy food obsession.

Gothamist reported, “The study, which was presented at the Canadian Obesity Summit in Vancouver this week and titled “Food Fetish: Society’s Complicated Relationship with Food,” suggests that some people who take photos of most of their meals do so because food plays a big role in their lives—this, in turn, could lead them to develop unhealthy eating habits and weight problems.

I’ll be the first to admit that food plays an important role in my life. Food fuels my energy for every day’s activities – of course it’s important! And living in a city like New York, it’s hard not to get excited at the newest trend in burgers or donuts, or the next big restaurant opening. Some may frown at indulging in these things; God forbid we celebrate with a cupcake or considering a glass of wine a reward after a long week.

Though, I’d like to think that my social posts are more motivating towards healthy habits. I drink homemade juices almost weekly, and dabble in predominately veggie recipes quite often. But, knowing that my Instagram isn’t exactly my food journal, this Gothamist article got me thinking – is my Instagram as healthy as I’d like to think I am?

I did some data mining and it appears I have 288 photos posted to date, 78 of which are food related. So I’m not completely antisocial, and I don’t have a relationship going with my daily lunch menu. That’s good, right?

Of my food photos, I would classify 28 as being super healthy, with juices, smoothies and salads being the healthiest posts.

P1010914

Twenty posts are neither healthy nor unhealthy, just amazingly delicious foods or interesting photos. I classified most home-cooked meals and things like sushi here –I thought these foods were healthy in moderation.

Thirty-one photos could classify as fat-kid-special, but more than half of these were photos of alcoholic beverages – 18 photos depicted Bloody Marys, quality beers and vino. photoHighlights from the remaining 13 “unhealthy” eats include rare indulgences like Shake Shack, Serendipity ice cream, and In-N-Out Burger. Holy cholesterol.

So how would I grade my Instagram? Balanced. And I think balanced is healthy. What do you think, is your Instagram making you fat? Is MY Instagram making you fat?

Warby Parker’s New Collection: 1922

A little over two months ago, I wrote how my desire for Warby Parker eyeglasses was pushing me to finally go back to the eye doctor and update my prescription. Boyfriend and I had a nice little shopping-in-SoHo Sunday, so I finally made it into Warby Parker to try on some specs. After trying on everything in the store, I landed on the Zagg in Tennessee Whiskey.

I am so excited about these glasses that I wish I needed them for day-to-day things, and not just going to the movies or driving a car (which I do about once a month).

I don’t necessarily consider myself a glasses kind of girl, but I was in love with almost every single style I tried on at Warby Parker. I am sad that I didn’t get to sample the new  1922 Collection, out today in both optical and sunglasses styles for all frames.

Perhaps I would have landed on the Duke

duke-optical-gold-angle Or maybe the Joplin…

Warby Parker Joplin

…Or  even the sunnies version of the Porter.Warby Parker Porter

They certainly have something for everyone, and as the dark-rimmed square frames become more and more mainstream, I can see the interwar glam styles of the 1922 Collection making their way to a hipster near you. I’m definitely considering diversifying my own sunglasses collection with one of these pairs.

What do you think, would you wear the 1922 Collection?

Foodie Friday: Blueberry Lemon Smoothie for Weight Loss

In her return to the blogging world yesterday, Amie (The Healthy Step-Mom) posted about willpower against cravings, and how difficult it can be. It was encouraging to read that even someone as fit as Amie battles with willpower every now and again.

When I’m feeling particularly tempted, I like to trick my body into thinking that I’m fulfilling its unhealthy cravings. Evil, I know – but it works! Wednesday, I felt like I was having dessert for breakfast when I replicated a blueberry lemon smoothie that my girl Deborah over at Delightfully Fit so generously instagrammed (yes, instagram is a verb now).

My version of the Blueberry Lemon Smoothie

Here is her recipe, with my variations in parentheses:

  • 1 banana
  • Greek yogurt (plain) (I used approximately half a cup)
  • Flaxseed (I replaced with 1 tablespoon of chia seeds)
  • Blueberries (I used one cup, frozen)
  • 1 lemon-ring slice sized rind (I put a whole, circular slice in – I wanted it to be very lemony)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla (I skipped this because my almond milk was vanilla)
  • A splash of unsweetened almond milk (I used vanilla almond milk, and put just enough to blend the mixture to my desired texture)
  • Stevia (I used half a packet of Truvia)

The result was a tangy and delicious breakfast that reminded me of a trip to Pinkberry – my sweet tooth was satisfied for the day!

What are your healthy craving alternatives?

Awkward & Awesome Thursday: Compliment Your Cab Driver?

AWKWARD

  • I keep forgetting the password to my blog. That MIGHT be why I haven’t posted in two weeks. Every time I get the motivation to share something, I try to log in so many times, that I have to reset my password, and then wait until WordPress will let me try again. I usually lose interest by that point…so sorry readers, for my shotty short-term memory. I’m working on it!
  • Boyfriend has a new job that is much more demanding of his time than the old one, and I’m learning how much he really does keep me on track to living a productive life. Case in point?
    • I have watched far too much Kardashian nonsense in the past two weeks
    • I have been surviving on take-out and leftovers because I just cannot motivate myself to cook for one person
    • There might be more random shoes and clothing (clean) strewn around the bedroom than usual. But at least I’m still making the bed every day, right?

On the up side, I have been a bit more focused on my work and maid of honor duties, and I have been going to the gym more than usual.

  • I loved the article in the New York Times yesterday showcasing compliments to NYC taxi drivers. This one really made me think – there have been a handful of situations where I’ve actually written down the driver’s information with the intent of complaining to 311, but I never knew that there was also a section for taxi riders to complement their drivers!

After three years of living in this amazing city, I have probably come across every type of cab driver possible. For every few awful drivers (incessantly talking on cell phones, taking the longer route, break-slamming, being creepy to the point that I get out and take the subway, etc.), there has been at least one amazing cab experience. Three or four specific situations come to mind, where the driver either did me a favor by picking me up while he was off duty because it was raining, did everything he could to re-route out of bad traffic or had a conversation so good that I felt like I was exiting a therapy session as I entered my apartment. I cannot wait to compliment my next good driver – they get a letter of praise in the mail when you do!

I want to hear your awkward and awesome cab driver stories! Please share in comments!

Kate Spade Saturday is Here

kate_spade_saturday_launch_christinadoes

You can finally shop Kate Spade Saturday

Today I was going to air my frustrations with Kate Spade for stringing us along since October, awaiting the launch of their new lifestyle brand Kate Spade Saturday. I woke up today, looked at my iPhone before my eyes were even fully open (tell me you do this too), and to my excitement, the brand has finally launched. I am absolutely loving the half-circle bag in natural and anything in signature zig zag.

What do you think of Kate Spade Saturday? Happy shopping!

Corned Beef and Cabbage Recipe for St. Patrick’s Day

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I was a lazy foodie and ordered a Rueben sandwich from the local diner instead of enjoying actual Irish fare. I’m not actually Irish, so I’m giving myself a pass this year. That’s not to say that I didn’t miss the annual feast of corned beef and cabbage with the family.

So, in honor of the holiday, I’m reposting my mom’s recipe for corned beef and cabbageShe’s not Irish either (obviously), but she makes a darn good corned beef. If you’re not married to a recipe of your own, I highly recommend you give this one a whirl.

Corned Beef and Cabbage

(Makes 6 servings)

Corned_Beef_and _Cabbage

INGREDIENTS:
  • 3-4 Lb. corned beef brisket
  • ½ cut shopped onion
  • 2 whole bay leaves
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • A dash of ground cloves
  • 6 medium potatoes peeled
  • 6 carrots
  • 6 cabbage wedges
  • Prepared powdered mustard (Coleman’s)
  • 2 or 3 cloves of garlic, minced

Place corned beef in a Dutch oven and barely cover with hot water. Add onions, garlic and bay leaves. Cover and simmer for 3 to 4 hours, or until tender (3 hours is probably enough). Remove meat from liquid; cover with foil and keep warm. Add whole potatoes and carrots cut in 2” or 3” pieces to liquid in Dutch oven. Coer and bring to a boil. Cook 10 minutes or so and add cabbage; then cook 20 minutes longer.

Meanwhile, glaze meat and spread fat side of meat lightly with mustard powder. Combine brown sugar and cloves and sprinkle over mustard. Bake in shallow pan at 350 F for 15 to 20 minutes uncovered. Arrange corned beef and vegetables on a warm platter for serving.

So so good!  Last year we went home with leftovers and I made a great breakfast of it too. Love me some corned beef! What do you eat to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?
